Is Online Gambling Legal in Michigan?
Yes, online gambling is legal in Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Internet Gaming act in December 2019 and the state is now positioned to become a serious player in online casinos and mobile sports betting. Michigan online gambling includes sports gambling, fantasy sports, online poker and casino games, and will feature many different options for bettors once the state agrees on various regulations and grants licenses.
In the meantime, online social casinos are totally legal in Michigan. Social casinos offer the same options as traditional casinos, with plenty of slot games, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, etc. The difference is rather than money, players bet with coins that have no monetary value. Bettors sign up through Facebook or email and receive a set number of coins to play with.
Chumba is one of the more popular social casino sites and gives players 2,000,000 gold coins and two sweeps coins once they sign up. Users can play all the popular slots and table games with the gold coins, but they can’t redeem them for actual money. The sweeps coins, however, can be used to play in various tournaments or sweepstakes that offer rewards – sometimes actual money. It’s still legal in Michigan because these rewards are classified as sweepstakes prizes rather than gambling winnings. You can check out Chumba here.
Potential Launch Dates for Legal Michigan Gambling
Michigan is in prime position to take advantage of the online gambling landscape. Its options include retail sports betting at brick-and-mortar casinos and elsewhere, online casino gambling, poker and mobile sports betting. While some states have gone retail-only or limited online options, Michigan is bringing everything to the table. But these things don’t happen overnight. Here’s a look at what we believe to be a realistic timeline for Michigan online gambling to roll out in phases.
Michigan retail sports betting: Michigan launched its first sportsbooks in March 2020. Greektown Casino in Detroit took its first legal sports bet March 11. MGM Grand in Detroit took its first sports bet the same day at the BetMGM Sports Lounge. MotorCity Casino kicked off sports betting with Detroit Lions Hall of Famer Barry Sanders on March 12. For now, Michigan is only granting retail sportsbook licenses to existing casinos.
Michigan online sports betting: While mobile sports betting is completely legal in Michigan, it isn’t operational yet. The Michigan Gaming Control Board still needs to set rules for online gaming, including partners and licensing agreements. Michigan will likely start to introduce mobile apps and legal online sports betting options in 2021.

Michigan online casino: Michigan is set to join New Jersey, Pennsylvania and others as states to offer full online casino gambling. Bettors will be able to play online slots, blackjack, roulette, three-card poker, baccarat and poker from the comfort of their own homes. It will take some time before these online casino sites are up and running. Michigan is expected to introduce its first online casinos in 2021.

Which Michigan Casinos Are Expected to Offer Online Services?
It remains to be seen which Michigan casinos will be first to offer online casino gambling as the MGCB continues to draft rules and regulations for online gambling sites in the state. But top social casinos remain totally legal in Michigan and are a great online gambling option for now. Check out our list of recommended online casinos and start playing today, get in some experience with the games, secure in the knowledge that they’re all safe and legit.
Will Michigan Offer Mobile Casino Apps?
With Michigan legalizing online sports betting and casino play, it seems inevitable mobile casino apps will follow. The state is still expecting to launch online gambling in 2021 once the MGCB gets a full handle on regulations, licenses, rules for online casinos, etc.
Mobile casino apps have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many top online casinos offer slick mobile apps and easy-to-use features. That means playing blackjack, roulette, three-card poker, slots and more from anywhere you’re able to get a cell phone signal. These online casino apps are very simple to download from your mobile phone or tablet. Then it’s simply a matter of signing up in order to access tons of table games, slots and more.
Expected Online Casino Games to Launch in Michigan
Online Poker in Michigan
Online poker in Michigan was first legalized in 2019. There are currently no online casino apps for bettors, but that’s expected to change in 2021 with the addition of regulated online poker operators in Michigan. PokerStars was granted the first partnership in 2020 – it’s the biggest online poker operator in the country and previously available exclusively in New Jersey.
Online poker rules and betting strategy are similar to traditional poker games, with a few exceptions. It’s far easier to find blinds and limits that fit your budget with all the options in online poker apps. But strategy is different with no face-to-face interaction. Playing the cards is more important in online poker as it’s tougher to pick up on player tells. It’s also more difficult to bluff. Online poker involves more numbers and card strategy than you’d find at an in-person poker room as a result.

Michigan Online Slots
Online slots in Michigan are currently legal and one of the most popular ways to play at online casinos. You can find dozens of slots at legal social casinos, which offer all the excitement of pulling the lever at a casino. Social casinos develop their own slot games, but they pattern them after popular games from popular slots software providers, so you can get the hand of them before online gambling sites launch.
Companies such as IGT and Bally are some of the most-known online slot providers and offer endless slot games just like the ones you’ll find at a brick-and-mortar casino. Playing online slots is a nearly identical experience, with a few extra conveniences and perks. You’ll never have to worry about finding a seat at your favorite wall of slots. And you won’t lose your seat if you need to get up and stretch your legs for a few minutes. Additionally, online slots will offer a higher RTP (Return to Player) than land-based ones as online operators have less expenses and overhead.
Online slots in Michigan should be available along with online casinos and mobile sports betting by 2021.
Online Blackjack in Michigan
All the top online casinos feature mobile blackjack as one of the most popular games. This will undoubtedly be the case in Michigan as well once the first online casino operators are up and running.
Playing online blackjack is a great way to have some fun, but it’s also great practice. Players don’t have to wait for everyone else at the table and can play as many as eight hands in the time it would take to play one at a land-based casino. Strategy is more important in blackjack than other table games, and online blackjack provides the opportunity to stay sharp and consistently make the most profitable decisions on whether to hit, stay, split or double down.
Online roulette is legal in Michigan and will be included with various online casinos by 2021 at the latest. Most will likely feature the same American Roulette rules as land-based casinos. This means that while the game is the same, it’s easier to place your bets wherever you want – no one wants to hold the table up placing bets everywhere while scrambling to keep track of all the chips.
Playing roulette online means no crowds and no waiting for all the bets at the table to get sorted out. Standard bets on black/red, odd/even and high/low are calculated instantly, and you can employ all the same strategies such as the Martingale and the James Bond systems.
Live dealer blackjack and other live dealer online games are legal in Michigan. But options for live dealer online casino games are generally limited, especially early on, and we expect that to be the case in Michigan as well. It’s an appealing alternative to traditional online blackjack and other table games, providing a more realistic feel with an actual deck of cards as games are conducted with a live video feed from a studio at the casino.
Borgata and 888, among others, both offer live dealer games and should continue to do so in 2021 assuming they’re licensed in Michigan.
Lottery in Michigan
Online lottery in Michigan is currently legal and available on mobile. Players can download the Michigan iLottery app via the Michigan Lottery website. Then all you need to do is register to get signed up and make an initial deposit with a credit/debit card or bank transfer.
Once the sign-up and deposit is complete, players can buy tickets for popular games like Mega Millions, Powerball, Fantasy 5 and Lotto 47. It’s hardly any different from buying a lottery ticket at a gas station – simply pick the numbers, buy a ticket and check the daily drawings to see if you hit the jackpot.
